WordPress “stats” tells me that this is post number one thousand in this blog. Without commenting on the mental state of anyone who makes that many posts, I will simply offer some photos taken a week ago in my favorite kind of place, a roadless area; this one being the Baldy Mountain Roadless Area in the Cabinet Mountains of western Montana. They are from the top, or near the top, of the mountain at just about 7,500 feet; 5,000 feet above the valley below. I wish it were possible for everyone to make the hike up there with me!

This is a very beautiful part of the country and it’s quite photogenic. Most of my scenery photos are taken away from the roads and I’m very thankful for the Forest Service trails in those places that have been preserved and maintained for so many years and provide hiking and horse access. This summer and last, the trail maintenance (and even some trail building) has been supported by some of the economic stimulus money and I think they have used it very well.

Thanks Rich! If I can I want to move around a little more this summer. I’m hoping to Hike Sundance Ridge from Vermillion Pass to Thompson River among others. I’ve also hear that Cabin Lake is very pretty and will fit that in soon.

I know what it’s like, living in high temperatures. We will get hot here in August, but we can still get into the high mountains and cool off a bit and our nights are cool even then.

I sure find it worth the effort. The road to the trail head is short and the trail is good, although it does have a 1,400 foot vertical to it. Once above the trees though you forget about everything else.
