About eight and a half miles from the highway up the Weeksville Creek road FS road 18299 runs off toward the west. It’s an old logging road that has been preserved for access but closed to motor vehicles and always a pleasant place to hike: sometimes when the light is just right it’s special. This photo was taken about 6:30 this evening just as the sun was beginning to set in the narrow canyons of the higher country; for me, a good reason to spend time there.

  1. Old logging trails are great places to hike. Ever run into a moose up there?

    • Yes, and there is moose sign all over that general area. There were tracks on the road. Haven’t seen one this year yet though. Yesterday a friend gave me a photo of one that she ran into last week.

  2. I can almost smell the fresh mountain air!!

    • It is fresh! Those forests are our last defense against carbon buildup in the atmosphere and imagine how much oxygen they produce.

  3. With such a view, I would be inclined to sit down after taking this picture and watch the night come.

    • I’ve done that many times. Add a small campfire and a sleeping bag under the firs.

  4. Beautiful view. I like the clouds just hanging there over the mountains.

    • I think the clouds were out for a stroll just as I was.

  5. I would love to spend some time there myself. Looks so pretty and peaceful. The blue sky and puffy clouds really set this photo off.

    • There is still country like this left, Preston. Hardly any “people” traffic, quiet and cool. Makes the headlines go away.
