Wow, great clouds, great shadows, and the blue sky is coming back!

It’s really nice to see some sun and clear sky. It was just the afternoon, but I’ll take it. There are a couple more days with some sun in the forecast, too! I love clouds, but by this time of winter I’ve had about enough of gray skies for awhile.

Those light conditions are a real gift when they occur. The mountain snow pack this year is only about half of normal, and the amount of snow we have received in the valleys is only about a third. There was a report on the news last night that showed 7% of the country is in drought conditions this year, and western Montana is in one of the drought areas. Thanks, El Nino!

The light was perfect and the clouds were in interesting places. Most of the time the clouds are in front of the tall peaks and this time they were behind them.

I know that feeling so well! I would have a very hard time living without the mountains. It’s bad enough not being able to get up into them during the winter.

It’s McDonald peak at about 9,800 feet. I’ve always loved to see it on a clear day. In most years there is snow at the top all year long.

Finally able to return! I was going to post a reply this afternoon when WordPress went down. This is quite beautiful or even quietly beautiful. I love the shapes, texture and those low lying clouds in the mountains!

Was this taken along Hwy #200 Terry? If it was, I have a shot of this. Except with mine I turned the camera a little bit more left so the saddle back is the focus. There was a lot more snow on the ground for Feb of the year I took it. Perhaps I’ll post it as an oldie but goodie on my blog. Love this. Great colors, light and composition.

Yes, just outside of Dixon a few miles. When the light conditions are good, there are some terrific scenes of the Missions from there. I’d love to see your photo!

I wish I could, Jewel! This was a scene I could see from the highway as I was on my way to the city. There is so much beautiful country around here, that if you’re out and about much, you’ll often run into some nice scenes. I spend a lot of time hiking and therefore it increases my chances. This time of year a helicopter would be handy to just get to the trail heads because the roads are so icy they are unusable.

Some times, that’s about all one can do, Preston. Often those mountains are hidden in clouds, but when they open up, one has to stop and catch a few photos or just enjoy the scene.

Thanks Ed! On the right day, I know you would really enjoy photographing that range. The light conditions and cloud patterns were constantly changing and it was a pleasure trying to catch it right.
