OK, so I’ll have to come clean and admit it: I’m just a pushover for winter moss. I stalked to within camera range of these examples yesterday down by the river as they basked in the sun. (We are having a bit of a blizzard at the moment tonight, so I suppose they are now tucked in under a fresh white blanket of snow.)

After spending years wondering why the moss seems to be at its annual best at exactly this time of year, I finally came to my senses and realized that it’s simply getting ready to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

Snow shower, that is! When they happen during the night it’s impossible to keep from getting outside the next morning to see the world’s brand new look.

(I was a little surprised at the depth of the blue in this photo, but the camera did what I asked and metered the exposure on the snow covered branches. The sky was still a little dark just a little after sunrise.)
