Montana Outdoors 
Wonderful, colorful, beautiful. Sometimes you have to look harder for color, but the payoff is huge.

Hey, Montucky, do you know what kind of trees those are that keep have the reddish brown color to their bare branches?
People keep asking me from photos.

Ann,
I had to work to get down among the ice cakes, but it paid off. I’m not really sure what produces the reddish colors. There are several types of brush that have reddish colors, one of which is the narrowleaf willow, and there could be more willow species with similar colors. I see them most often quite near the water along streams.

I’ve always loved the rivers and after spending so many years in the desert, Montana’s rivers are extra special and I spend a lot of time near them. As water becomes more precious, they also increase in importance.

It is indeed awesome to be in and with the beauty of this country. It’s interesting that you mentioned silence. I’m so used to silence here that I don’t too often think about it. While taking these photos, some crashes of ice cakes colliding made me realize that the sound did indeed break the silence.

It’s a pretty place on clear days in winter, SuzieQ, but by mid summer outside of the emerald green of the river, it’s all brown. I still like it there though. The mountains behind me where I took the photo are in the Reservation Divide roadless area and it’s very nice forest up there.

Thanks, Lori! It won’t be long until we have a lot of color again! With all of the snow you’ve had, the late spring and summer should be beautiful indeed! We still need more snow in this area especially in the high country.

It’s been many years since I did a solo canoe trip from Dixon to Perma. It won’t be too long before the ice is gone…. Lovely shot.

In that area, nothing much has changed I’m happy to say. There are several places along that stretch, or a little west of it, where I wouldn’t mind living were it not on the reservation. One in particular on the south side of the river where yo could raise a few cattle, horses and hay along the river, yet be at the base of the mountains where you could just saddle up and ride into the high country for a hunt.

It’s nice to know that some places haven’t changed much. Esp in that area. I had a friend that owned a cabin on the south side (near McDonald). What a special place that was!

Looks like a thousand piece picture puzzle. No, more like a fifteen hundred piece puzzle. A very expensive puzzle at that. Wonderful color.
