February is the month when the tiny rock mosses have their most colorful season of the year in their homes on the old rock wall just up the road. Much of the wall has come apart since it was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps back in the ’30’s, but that which remains has a nice covering of lichens, and in February, these little plants add touches of green and a variety of textures.

Most of these are only an inch or two across and for some reason have adapted to flourish during the last month or two of winter: earlier in the season they are covered with snow and ice, and in the summer they dry out and appear to be dead. They are so small they can easily be overlooked, but every February I look forward to seeing them reappear for their short “summer” again.
