Then and now

Filed under: Montana, Nature, Outdoors, Photography, Photos, Pictures — montucky @ 10:31 pm

This afternoon it seemed appropriate to spend a few hours following in the footprints of a solitary coyote, for no special reason other than to see what he was up to and to enjoy some of the scenes that he sees every day. I was not surprised when his meandering trail led me to a small, lonesome ridge a short distance above the valley, and when it disappeared into some large rocks atop a bluff, I broke away from his tracks rather than disturb him in his home.

Just beyond the coyote’s ridge lies a little meadow which I visit with relative frequency, and as I strolled through it in the afternoon sun, my boots making crunching noises on the snow, I recalled that the last time I had visited there was during the oppressive heat of July. I enjoyed the scenes then and I enjoyed them again today, although they are visually quite different, and it occurred to me that a pictorial contrast might be interesting. Here it is:

  2. I thought of you today, when our temperature dropped about thirty degrees. Yesterday it was 89 for a high, tomorrow it will not reach 60. We will be cold, though you would probably count it as oppresive heat. I am sure the coyotes here will be glad for the relief.

  4. Well FF&F, now that we’re used to it being a little cooler, 89 would be terribly uncomfortable. At the moment it is 18 here, headed for a single-digit night. Stay warm and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

  5. It’s always nice to change outfits once in awhile. Refreshing, don’t you think? Nice contrasts.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

  7. Your contrasts are beautiful. But, as much as I do love snow (despite my little “rant” on my own blog), I really love the July images best. Especially, the third one from the top … guess it’s the flowers that make me long for Spring and Summer weather.

Here, in New England, we’ve gotten a little “reprieve” from the cold. In some areas, it will reach 60 degrees today. But, by tonight and tomorrow, we will be paying for it with some unusually cold temperatures and high winds!

    Happy Thanksgiving to all!

  8. That storm you are about to have is the same one that dropped our snow a couple of days ago. It was nasty here for two days,

I also prefer the other seasons, but I also know that it takes the winter to keep this country the way it is, and so I wouldn’t want it to change. It makes me appreciate the flowers even more.

I hope your Thanksgiving is safe, warm and pleasant!

  9. I love the first two shots – something about the treeline looks haunting. I really wonder how it would look at a darker point of the day. Great shots honestly! I missed you on this one but here to hoping this thanksgiving was your best!!

  10. Thanks, Lori!

It was a good day for us. A great dinner after a morning hunt with my son; two of my favorite things!

  12. I enjoy the contrast, too. I especially like to think about the flowers, whose seeds are sleeping beneath that blanket of snow and look forward to visiting them next summer!
