October sunset

The colors are unusual for this time of year. Do you suppose the sky is competing with the leaves for attention?

  1. The color is almost unbelievable… until now I was not sure that this color even existed. 🙂 (see my point? can’t really call that red, or orange, or pink, … what do you call that?) Leave it to you to add another crayon to the box. 🙂 Nice work.

  2. I think I’ll call that color ‘Neon Deliberation’. Just because I can.

    Beautiful.

  4. Lori,

I think the only time I’ve seen that color is in a sunset during fire season when there was smoke in the air, but this was just two nights ago and there was no smoke around at all.

  5. Pinhole,

That’s a good name for it. It does look like a color that that could be produced using the old neon sign technology. When I was in high school I worked after school in a sign shop and saw some cool colors produced from mixing gases.

  6. wolf,

This color display was very brief. A minute after these photos it was gone. Some folks around here think I’m about half a bubble off plum for carrying a camera around all the time, but you never know what you’ll see. (For the record, I’ve now carried it 567 miles since May, and that’s just the hiking distance.)

  7. “About half a bubble off plum”? I hope you don’t mind, but I’m stealing that.
That’s quite a distance for your camera. Mine goes everywhere with me as well, although I don’t hike nearly as much as you do. But I too have gotten some shots that were gone literally seconds after I clicked the shutter.

  8. Especially trying to photograph animals. They usually don’t stay around long. My auto-focus is pretty fast, but sometimes not fast enough.

The next test will be cold weather. I’m using a rechargable Lithium battery pack now and carry a spare, but sub-zero is tough. Probably will carry the camera inside my parka!

  9. Love the color in these Terry, looks like a stalemate between the leaves and the sky, I will just have to take them both 🙂
