He’s just a youngster, but he knows where all the apple trees are.

This guy is in really, really big trouble because he ate a bunch of my wife’s favorite flowers last night.

  2. Yes, he’s a pretty little buck. The other night he had a larger friend with him, but I couldn’t get a shot at him. He had lots of hardware!

  3. At least you have some nice photos of the fellow before your wife knocks that smirk off his face.

  4. Yeah. I’m glad I’m not in his position! I think I just paid for a long-distance call to the Pentagon… something about an air strike, I believe.

  5. Nice shot Terry, the deer are really starting to move in our area, seen a huge buck the other night while we driving home from Louisville.

  7. Bernie,

Yes, the cooler temperatures are getting everything motivated. We’re seeing a lot of bear activity and increased deer activity, especially with bucks. All the critters are trying to put on those last extra pounds of fat before winter. This morning it was 28ยบ here and that kind of temperature stimulates them a lot.

  8. wolf,

Yep, at the very least he’s going to get his tail pulled! I told him last night that he’d better head for the high country where the worst he has to worry about is the sasquatch.

  9. Montucky – he is sooo beautiful! Look at those beautiful eyes of his. I cannot imagine anyone, including your wife, would want to harm him. ;o)

  10. He is pretty, Mary, but now he’s getting too bold. That won’t be good come hunting season. I’ll start trying to put a good scare into him soon or he will end up in someone’s freezer.

  11. These critters keep nibbling on our apple trees, pretty much ensuring that if I don’t keep spraying them (the trees), neither the deer nor us are ever going to see any fruit.

Surprisingly, the deer have also been taking after the leaves on our jalapeno pepper plants.

  12. The deer have eaten about everything in our yard in the last couple weeks. Garden plants, flowers, lilacs and as high as they can reach in the apple trees. Now they seem to be alternating nights with a black bear. I don’t remember them eating jalapenos though, but we usually grow ours in the greenhouse.

I feel really sorry for the bears because the berries in the higher elevations dried up very early this year, but there is all kinds of stuff for the deer to eat out there. A few minutes ago we watched a very big 4X4 stroll through the back yard.

  13. […] reminded me of my own experience of a similar kind to what he described. He titled the entry “Profile of an apple thief” and it’s about a young buck that just happens to know where all of the apples are […]
