Yesterday I met this little butterfly in the Patrick’s Knob roadless area in the Coeur d’Alene Mountains of Western Montana. I didn’t know his name and I didn’t even know the name of his flower, but I did know that his species and his whole world is in danger of vanishing forever…
at the hands of my species, the vastly more intelligent one. I didn’t know how to tell him.
(My friend aullori has helped me out with the identities of the Pine White butterfly and the Pearly Everlasting flow he is on. Thanks, aullori!)
He is a real beauty Terry, I have never seen one quite like it, I really like that bloom as well. Thanks for sharing these with us.

Both are firsts for me as well. You never know what you will find in such an area.

Lie to him. Lie like there’s no tomorrow. We’re humans…it’s what we do.
Lovely little fella, though.

Pinhole,
You’re right of course. I keep wanting to forget about that.

nice photos
I have read about how the creeping-sprawling-of urban areas is killing off the birds and butterflies and how we are doing more damage than we know-or perhaps are willing to admit- to ourselves

Close to here it isn’t urban sprawl but wealthy people from other areas buying property and building big homes and pushing the wild country farther and farther back. They come here because of the beauty of the unspoiled land and by developing such huge pieces of it they destroy the very thing they came here for.

Not to take away from your commentary (which is vastly important) but looking up butterflies are way easier than looking up wildflowers. Most likely you have a very handsome male Pine White. (He is also sitting a top a pearly everlasting wildflower.) Who knows now that the mysterious fellow has a name he’ll garner a bit more respect? (probably not from the local land baron) but from the likes of us? probably so.
You last comment is exactly the contradictory part of mankind that “corn-fuses” me. They come to enjoy only to destroy. Funky.
At least the handsome butterfly knows what he’s doing 🙂 and so do you beautiful shots Montucky.

Thanks for the help identifying the flora and fauna! I had never before seen either of them. Let’s hope he will get a little more respect now that he has a name.
