I don’t know if this phenomenon occurs in non-mountains areas or not. At sunset there was a dark storm overhead and to the west, but at a compass reading of 135º (directly southeast) a window in the sky opened and orange clouds showed through: the other side of the sunset.

I have seen that a few times Terry, makes for an amazing display, this is a beautiful image I especially love the reflections in the water. Did you happen to get any rain out of it to help with the fires?

Beautiful photo. It happens often in Florida when the sea breeze storms work inland and the sun shines above the clouds.

Bernie,
The whole evening was filled with color that day.
We ended up with a quarter of an inch here, enough to wet the grasses for about a day. I think for any major fires, the only event that will stop them is the first good heavy snowfall.

It’s usually just the distance that makes them look purple, or sometimes moisture in the air. Now it’s smoke, and even the close ones look that way.
