As a result of spending most of a lifetime in the outdoors, I have an understanding of how at least a part of nature works. But I still have a big list of question marks.
For example, I just noticed two photos that sit side by side in one of my files (which are getting completely out of hand, by the way), having been taken on adjacent days. The first one is of a Cottontail who is taking full advantage of his natural camouflage, and that certainly makes a lot of sense. He is easy to overlook, even to a trained eye.
But what in the world is the strategy of this little crab spider? (I do have to admire his attitude though!)
That rabbit is using the old noggin. As for the spider, I’d just as soon they remain as visible as possible.

I would be careful if I was you Terry, I think he may take that camera away from you and open a can of kick-ass on you.

Pinhole,
This guy is doing all he can to be visible. I wouldn’t think that would work, but what do I know. Remember the little yellow crab spider I posted back in the old WU days?

Bernie,
I might have to make friends with him and use him for a body guard. He’d probably work all day for a grasshopper! He’s just a trace of white pigment and the rest is attitude!

Cottontails are great for this stance aren’t they? When we wandered into yellowstone – one of the boys (we took three) saw a cottontail wander down the road. We stopped for lunch and he went looking for him – instead out of a forest wandered what looked like a 800 pound male buffalo. Talk about surprised! Maybe he was a shape-changer straight out of some sci-fi flick…? That’s a great shot of a crab spider – I have to admit I’m with the fella who states that he likes them clearly visable. Fundementally next to the California Prontis spiders are probably my second less liked nature shows. (I know… I know they are a necessary evil.)

Looking for a cottontail and coming up with a buffalo. Now that’s really funny! Wherever that happens is my kind of place!

I didn’t see this little guy catch anything, but we had one in our flower bed last summer and I saw him catch several insects. They know what they’re doing!
