The light was right

Filed under: Environment, Montana, Nature, Outdoors, Photography, Photos, Pictures — montucky @ 6:50 pm

This morning on a trip to the city for some supplies, as we drove along the lower part of the Flathead River a hundred miles or so downstream from Glacier Park, I looked to my left and it suddenly occurred to me that the light was exactly right on a scene I’ve always enjoyed. I pulled off the road immediately, got out of the truck, and after a careful stalk of about a hundred yards was able to capture these two photos. The river is maybe 150 yards wide through here and the country on the far side is still wild. It’s far different than the high mountain ridges that I love so much, but it does have its own brand of beauty.

  1. I can see why you stopped, the light and reflections in this are wonderful, there wouldn’t happen to be a trout or two in there ?

  3. Bernie,

There are a few trout in there, but the water here is a little warmer than they like it. There are more bass, and some huge Northern Pike. About 10 miles downstream though, after it has joined the Clark’s Fork, the trout fishing is pretty good.

  4. silken,

There are so many scenes like this around that it’s always nice to drive through Western Montana. A few years ago I had a fifty mile commute to work (one way), but never minded the drive a bit.

  5. Reflections of sky and mountains in water always intrigue us as we–perhaps–look for messages in the liquid mirror.

    These are especially nice photographs.

  6. Or maybe because we understand how precious water really is.
