American Kestrel

Photographing birds has never been one of my strengths, but the last week or so there have been many opportunities and so I give it the “old college try”.

Yesterday, upon hearing a loud racket high in some cottonwood trees I scrutinized the area as well as I could and never did find the maker of the noise. However, I wasn’t the only interested observer, and I barely caught sight of these little guys in an adjacent tree. I think they were accusing me of creating all the fuss. They blend in quite well, don’t they?

After trying my best to identify them, I returned today hoping for another peek, and got this shot of one of them. They are not quite ready to fly, but flutter around from branch to branch, never getting more than a branch or two from home, which is a cavity about 30 feet up in the tree. Fortunately, Mother made a lightning-quick appearance which informed me of her size and enabled me to ID them as American Kestrels.

Still, I could be wrong and if so, please someone, correct me.
