I always like to see a butterfly.

And it’s pleasant seeing two.

But nothing beats a nice butterfly bouquet!

  1. These are a great set as well. I see this all the time up here as well – do you have any idea what they are doing? (I don’t so its a sincere question here.)

  2. I have no idea, but I see it a lot, with all different kinds of butterflies and usually in damp or wet places, although I’ve seen some gather also in dusty spots. These seemed to be quite colorful though, so I put down my fly rod and got a few shots.

  3. Quite a herd. Looks a little like they’re playing rugby. the top one must be the announcer.

    Great shots.

  4. There are several small yellow and small blue butterflies that seem to follow me around when I’m working in the yard. I always wonder if they’re aware of me or if we’re just randomly crossing paths.

  5. Pinhole,

Yup, that’s the announcer. The guy who has the tough job is the one who does the “color”!

  6. knight,

I’ve noticed that they seem to be pretty aware if I’m moving, but if I’m completely still they don’t seem to notice me. However, with those huge wings and a little breeze, I’m sure a lot of what they do is random!

  8. Butterflies are a fascination I wish I understood better. All the colors and the huge wings that I would think inefficient. Another thing that makes me wonder why.

  9. Hi Bernies butterflies reminded me of this post – thought I’d let you know what I learned watching a nature show on them just recently. It said that the butterflies need certian trace minerals, it’s only the males, and they gain them by sitting on and licking on rocks. It’s a butterfly version of “Cheers” all the good ole boys busting up to the bar to catch a drink. I always wondered – and a three-am I can’t sleep nature show on making butterfly gardens finally filled me in.

  10. Lori, thanks for the info! I’ve seen them doing that so often and just as often wondered why. I appreciate that! Makes sense! I’ve also seen them on coyote droppings, but I really don’t want to know what they’re doing there.

    • Now that you mentioned them, I just looked at a few photos on Google Images and I believe they are. Sadly, my ability to identify butterflies just doesn’t exist.
