Tonight while replying to a comment I reviewed my photo archives from the past several Septembers and was reminded that September is a very good month here for sunsets. This one occurred on September 5, 2009.

This photo was taken in late August from a tall peak as the sun set behind other tall peaks in the distance.

Early this evening dark clouds covered the sky, then a brief thunderstorm. As it cleared I headed down to the river just in time to catch this brief but colorful sunset from the same vantage point as yesterday’s.

I marked this exact spot and will return there for the next colorful sunset (hopefully).
September 3, 2009
Last night not long after I had returned from what has become a rather traditional after dinner hike it was brought to my attention that the sky had suddenly gotten very colorful. Grabbing my camera with one hand, a tripod with the other and the Jeep keys with a third (yeah, I wish!), I headed up river a ways where I might get a photo of the proceedings. There was time for only one shot after which I went home in disappointment, thinking I had missed the colorful moment. Upon uploading the photo I saw that I had caught at least some of what had been a very colorful scene. (It looks as though this may turn out to be a good month for sunsets.)

Photographed from Patrick’s Knob, the sun is setting over the Cherry Peak roadless area in western Montana’s Coeur d’Alene Mountains.
