  1. It looks like a creature made entirely of light and energy… love it.

    Comment by Teresa Evangeline — July 11, 2013 @ 9:19 pm

    • Maybe that’s why I liked it, it presents the idea of a creature.

  2. It certainly isn’t what one would see in a photo like this.Talk about power. What the universe has is still a mystery. Cool picture..

  3. WoW! That’s an amazing photo! Did you take it on 4th of July this year? It looks like a creature.

    Comment by twoscamps — July 11, 2013 @ 10:41 pm

    • Yes, the county fairgrounds had a fireworks show. This was taken from about a mile away. I took about 50 and most turned out pretty well; this one has haunted me though.

  4. Did you photoshop it? It looks like a giant electric caterpillar. Great shot!

    Comment by wordsfromanneli — July 11, 2013 @ 10:42 pm

    • No, I don’t have photoshop. It was a 4 second (handheld, believe it or not) exposure at f/9.8, ISO125. I had not tried shooting fireworks before. An electric caterpillar is a good description!

      • The sky is so black behind it. Hand held? Very good!

        Comment by wordsfromanneli — July 11, 2013 @ 10:59 pm

        • I like the black background. We have very little light pollution here and there was just a mountain range behind the fireworks.

  5. Hand of some beast from space? Well, it is great photo.

    Comment by Sartenada — July 11, 2013 @ 11:06 pm

    • Thanks Matti. I guess each of us can see something different in it. It was fun to try a few shots anyway.

    • Thanks Maria. I was just experimenting and a surprising number of the photos were pretty cool.

  7. I didn’t have much luck getting shots of fireworks this year-first time I ever tried with a digital camera. This one is excellent.

    Comment by New Hampshire Gardener — July 12, 2013 @ 4:19 am

    • This was the first time I’ve tried to shoot fireworks too. I was surprised by several of them.

  9. Almost look like large flowers.

    Comment by knightofswords — July 12, 2013 @ 5:50 am

    • That might be where they got the idea for the design.

      Comment by montucky — July 12, 2013 @ 9:58 pm

  10. Love this Electric Caterpillar and that it is hand held is amazing. Thanks for posting just one!

  14. I can see why! That is one cool shot. Sometimes fireworks pictures all look alike to me, but not this one, it’s definitely unique.

    Comment by Mama's Empty Nest — July 12, 2013 @ 10:15 am

    • Just lucky. Out of about 50, there were only a couple that looked like the usual fireworks shots. Now if I can remember how I did it.

  15. This is super!!!

  16. Looks like Butte 03 July. Canon Elphs have a nice fireworks shutter setting.

    Comment by ecoroverEcoRover — July 12, 2013 @ 3:31 pm

    • You probably had more of a display there, but this one was pretty nice. At the Sanders County fair grounds in Plains.

  17. It’s a beautiful capture. I didn’t see the caterpillar until others mentioned it. Instead, I saw a lovely blossom with spiderwebs clinging. We had some nice fireworks here this year – I always enoy them so much.

    Comment by shoreacres — July 12, 2013 @ 4:42 pm

    • I’m finding it very interesting seeing what folks see in the image. Kind of fun! I enjoy fireworks here because there is no hustle and bustle involved. I drove 3 miles to get a clear look at the sky over the fairgrounds and that was it; no one even around me.

  18. A pretty skyflower, that.

  22. Only you could take this incredible photograph. Just amazing!

    Comment by WildBill — July 13, 2013 @ 6:39 am

  23. That is very unique. I’ve never really tried them either as setting up a tripod at night with a lot of cats around is problematic. Remembering the settings is difficult…

    Comment by Candace — July 14, 2013 @ 11:17 pm

    • I can imagine a tripod with a bunch of cats. LOL. It was fun to give it a try.

      Comment by montucky — July 14, 2013 @ 11:28 pm

  24. Very nice Terry !!
