I see that Pinhole and Trick Falls have nominated me for A Roar for Powerful Words award for writing, which obliges me to offer three tips for writing. Pinhole and TF, thank you for considering me!
I’m not sure that I qualify as much of a writer for many reasons, one of which is my first tip and one which I just can’t seem to take to heart myself: don’t procrastinate! I often come up with a pretty good idea but by the time I get around to writing about it, I’ve forgotten most of the critical details. I doubt that good writers do that very often.
Yesterday I read an ABC News report about the recent flooding in Nevada. The following is from that report and although it’s actually a quote from an individual, I think it’s a great illustration of my second tip: “The snow is about 2 inches in depth and the temperatures are right near the frigid mark both for the rescuers and rescuees.” Don’t write dumb things like that! You lose any credibility that you might have established.
For most of the past year, I have not done any writing really, having concentrated mostly on a photo-journal of sorts, in an effort to emphasize the astounding beauty of Mother Nature’s wild country, and thereby hopefully stimulate some folks to help preserve and protect it before it is completely lost. I am interested in writing though, and perhaps some day I will make more attempts at it. My last tip is simply a way I judge what I have written and decide whether to hit the “delete” or the “submit” key. As I read what I’ve written, do I feel at peace with it? I’d just bet that many writers use some form of that same test.
Now the rules for this “ROAR” thing state that I should bestow the award on others, and besides many who have already been nominated, three excellent writers immediately come to mind who would be very interesting to hear from if they are interested. If they would rather not, I completely understand.
silken, who writes some great stuff about homeschooling and many other things on several blogs.
myinneredge, who has a very interesting and inspirational blog on WordPress,
winterwoman who does indeed love winter and writes a fascinating and informative blog about the world of nature and includes lots of excellent photos.

For someone who doesn’t call themselves a writer, you’ve got some good tips. I particularly enjoy the second one, but they all can apply to me at some time or another.

The second one seems to be a real problem with today’s journalists, many of whom don’t respect their own writing enough to re-read it and see if it makes any sense. They quickly lose me as part of their audience.

Great tips, Montucky! And I guess I knew you first as a writer was why you were one of the first ‘writers’ I thought of choosing.
Thanks for playing.

Thanks, Pinhole! You’re right, back in the old days at WU I did make more attempts at writing. I guess I have gotten distracted and/or lazy lately. Sure do miss that old site!

I couldn’t think of any tips when FF&F slid this award under the door of my office late at night and then ran like hell, so I made up tips. Your’s are pretty cool though, both for readers and for writers (oops, I broke tip #2).
Congrats on finding three more victims to bestow this award upon.

Malcolm,
I’ve been reading, enjoying and benefitting from your writing tips for about a week short of 2 years now. You are entirely right too, about readers also benefitting from an understanding of good writing techniques.
I found this exercise interesting as I thought about potential “victims”, too. It made me more appreciative of those who really are writers.

thanks for the tag montucky. ffaf already tagged me and I posted mine at my did you know blog. I would follow one of my own tips and link to it here, but I am having lots of trouble w/ my internet connection right now….
love your tips, I find myself using all of these at one time or another…

silken,
Yes, I saw your post after I posted. The old group is pretty spread out these days, aren’t we? I can relate to your connection: I have lots of problems with mine too, and some of our sites seem to be harder to work with than others.

Greetings Terry and thanks for the ROAR! It gave me pause to think and I’ll go public with my writing “tips” later this morning. It occurs to me that there’s something magical about combining a camera with a keyboard. Your photos inspire me as much as your writing and love how your stories unfold in harmony with the great outdoors!
Warm blessings as always…

Thanks, Sandy!
I think you’re right about combining the camera and keyboard. I see you are getting some really nice stuff from your new camera already! It kind of grows on you, doesn’t it? I’m looking forward to your post!
