Surprised again
July 15, 2007 by montucky
This morning I noticed a very busy little butterfly visiting a wildflower, and was barely able to detect a tiny splash of color. Then I asked the lens to show me what that little one-inch-long guy really looked like, and this was today’s surprise…

That’s the most intriguing color I’ve ever seen on a butterfly. Your lens did good.
Kind of looks like an alien, doesn’t it?
The color in the photo is very accurate to what I remember except that the other side of the wings wasn’t pure black. I think that’s a distortion caused by going through Flickr: my copy on my hard drive is a little more gentle. The big eyes were a complete surprise when I reviewed the photo. They certainly do have the classic “alien” look! It’s a beautiful creature though.
That is an AWESOME shot, montucky! Flickr may have distorted it, but it’s still cool. I have a caption for it coming to mind, but it’s still fermenting…
OK, it fermented, and here’s what I came up with. My apologies:

Shooting these real little guys is like working blind. The LCD gives me an idea of what I’m getting, but it doesn’t show everything. I really feel good when I find out that I captured something nice.
wolf, that’s great! You interested in a partnership?
A partnership sounds like fun, montucky! Got some more pics you’d like captioned? I’m thinking motivational posters, calendars, lacy underthings…
Ok, maybe I’m getting ahead of myself. Seriously, though - it’d be cool coming up with captions for some of your pics.
What a gorgeous butterfly, the colors are amazing in this Terry, beautiful image.
wolf,
I like the idea a whole lot, but I’m not sure what we could do with them. There’s gotta be something!
Bernie,
I’m very pleased with it. My luck seems to be holding! This was, for me, a fairly typical situation. A subject who moved every few seconds, a terribly harsh light situation, and as I shot it I was starting to slide down a steep bank about 90 feet high. Somehow, between the camera and the butterfly, something worked right.
ahhhhhh wow! (I have little more to say than that)
aullori,
Good to see you back. I hope you had a great time in Yellowstone!
